Alexander R. Atchison

Alex Atchison joined Young Moore and Henderson in 2001 after practicing with the firm of Tew & Atchison, P.A. Alex is a North Carolina State Bar Certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law. He practices in the areas of business planning, estate planning, wills, trusts, wealth transfer, estate administration and premarital agreements. He became a shareholder in 2006.

Alex's business practice includes a broad range of general business services, including business structuring and formation, the acquisition or sale of assets or ownership interests of a business entity as well as advising business owners with ongoing issues that arise during the course of their business. Alex is able to draw on his experience with estate and wealth transfer planning to address the often complex needs of clients with family owned businesses.

As a member of the firm's estate planning and probate practice team, Alex works closely with clients to structure estate plans that realize clients' goals for disposition of their assets. He is experienced in designing estate plans which address the reduction of estate and gift taxes. He is also experienced in planning for disability and planning for eligibility for government health care benefits.

In conjunction with the estate planning and probate practice team, Alex works closely with executors and fiduciaries in the administration of decedent's estates, including providing services to fiduciaries such as preparing and filing all documents and accountings to commence, administer and formally close estate proceedings; ascertaining and paying valid estate debts; collecting and transferring estate assets to the appropriate beneficiaries; and filing death tax and fiduciary income tax returns. He also has experience working with clients, including corporate fiduciaries, in probate and fiduciary disputes.

Alex also advises clients on a wide range of trust administration issues, including providing comprehensive services to individual and corporate trustees, such as modifying and terminating irrevocable trusts, and preparing and filing annual accountings and fiduciary income tax returns.

Alex received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and his law degree from Samford University, Cumberland School of Law. Alex is a member of the American Bar Association, North Carolina Bar Association, and the Wake County Bar Association.

Alex, his wife, Michele, and their children live in Clayton, NC.
